Statement of the Honorable Louis Stokes (D-OH) before the Select Committee to investigate covert arms transactions with Iran July 14, 1987 (pdf document)

Congressman Stokes served on the House Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran. That committee questioned one of the principle figures in the affair, Lt. Col. Oliver North, a decorated Vietnam Veteran.

Congressman Stokes, a military veteran of WWII, questioned Colonel North when he appeared before the committee. In a nationally televised interchange, Stokes movingly and convincingly labeled Colonel North’s brand of patriotism that led to this affair as “ugly.”
