Carl ran for State Senate.

Carl had worked as a state liquor enforcement agent between stints at college and later as a probation officer to support himself in law school. He chose a legal career since he felt that “[Lawyers] were the only black men I could see who didn’t have white masters.” However, unlike Louis, Carl used his legal training as springboard to a political career.
