Lou Interview-

Bring your class to experience the exhibit, Carl and Louis Stokes, From the Projects to Politics, and to participate in the associated education program, “To Become Somebody”.

This exhibit matches Ohio’s Content Standards in Social Studies more than any exhibit we have ever done!

“To Become Somebody”
Education Program (Grades 3-12
)

The Stokes brothers, Louis and Carl, rose from the poverty of life in the projects of urban Cleveland to the high-ranking political offices of Mayor of Cleveland and long term Congressman. This is a journey of personal achievement that provides heroes and exemplars representative of the American experience. It also places this experience at the time of the civil rights movement and major, critical changes in the history of Cleveland and the United States.

Louis’ and Carl’s mother constantly encouraged them “To Become Somebody”. Students who visit the exhibit and education programming associated with it, will be encouraged in the same way.

Your class will spend time in the exhibit examining primary sources and artifacts while using critical thinking skills to gather information, draw inferences, consider options of what the information means, and synthesize to interpret history. This is facilitated by a museum educator with a well developed inquiry-based platform of standards-based topics aligned to grade level indicators. The standards so well represented in this exhibit are history, citizenship rights and responsibilities, government and social studies skills and methods.
